ROAD MAINTENANCE & OPERATIONS

What roadwork does the Trust handle?

  • In short, the Trust takes care of the roadways / the asphalt. Nothing more.  The Trust is a “Roads Trust” and therefore only focused on maintaining passable and safe roads.

  • Road-related tasks refer to all the activities necessary to keep a road safe, functional, and well-maintained. These tasks vary based on whether a road is public or private, but generally fall into the categories of routine maintenance, repairs, safety improvements, and seasonal upkeep.

  • The main work contracted by the Trust is as follows:

    • Plowing (Salting and Sanding)

    • Sweeping

    • Pot hole repairs

    • In rare cases, trimming low hanging trees that are obvious dangers

    • Repainting lines and bumps

    • Posting signage

    • Clearing drains

What is “Safe for Travel”?

  • “Safe for Travel” means Clear of Major Hazards (No significant obstructions) & Passable Surface Conditions (Pavement is stable, with no large potholes or structural failures).

    • Roads without sidewalks “safe for travel” refers to vehicular traffic only. Please exercise caution when walking as you would on any roadway without a sidewalk or traffic light, especially in bad weather.

  • It doesn't guarantee perfect road conditions—there may still be minor hazards like potholes or traffic congestion.

  • It doesn't mean risk-free travel—drivers are still expected to use caution, especially in bad weather.

  • A roadway being deemed "safe for travel" means that it is in a condition where vehicles and pedestrians can use it without undue risk.

Does the Trust clean up trash?

  • No. Residents are expected to police their own properties for trash and debris, similar to public expectations in town.

Does the Trust cut down trees or branches?

  • No. Only branches or trees obstructing the roadway are trimmed or removed. The Trust does not proactively manage tree growth.

  • As our utility lines are above ground on most streets you may see trucks trimming trees, however this is not the Trust and this is standard practice for all utility companies.

Does the Trust take action to offset road damage from residential construction?

  • Yes. Starting in 2026, to help mitigate the impact of construction related traffic on the roads, the Weston Roads Trust applies a fee equal to .25% of the permitted construction cost to all new residential projects within the Trust area.

  • This fee helps fund repairs caused by increased wear and tear from heavy vehicles and equipment.

SAFETY, SECURITY & SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS

Who to contact for urgent safety concerns, such as patches of ice or fallen tree (into the road)?

  • All escalations should be directed to representatives of the Road Trust. CONTACT US

  • The Weston Police Department will also notify the Trustees if and when they are contacted.

Does the Trust provide surveillance or security in response to safety concerns or break-ins?

  • No. Surveillance falls outside the scope of the Weston Roads Trust. The Trust is a utility organization, and its sole mandate is to maintain the condition and safety of the roadways themselves. Matters related to home security or neighborhood surveillance are the responsibility of individual residents.

Can non-residents use the roads?

  • No. These are private roads. Using them as a cut-through is trespassing.

Why is Doublet Hill different?

  • Doublet Hill has a town agreement dating back to 1977 for to assure access to the water tower at the top of the road. As a result, the town maintains the road for their access to the water tower.

Why is Rolling Lane different?

  • Rolling Lane is partially public.

Who are the abutters and why are they associated with the Roads Trust?

  • Abutters are properties that do not have direct driveway access to Weston Roads Trust (WRT) roads but share a property boundary with them. While these properties do not fully utilize the Trust-maintained roadways, they benefit indirectly from proximity—such as improved traffic flow, snow removal access, and general roadway upkeep.

  • Because of this partial benefit, abutters are assessed dues at a reduced rate—50% of the standard per-acre fee. Their association with the Roads Trust reflects their connection to the infrastructure without being full-use beneficiaries.

  • The Trust maintains a working list of abutter parcels to ensure appropriate billing.
